NOVEMBER 2022
A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL EGAN
Principal Bill Egan NCHS

Dear New Canaan High School Families,

It’s officially sweater weather—fall is here!  Believe it or not, the first quarter ends on November 2nd, and grades will be available in PowerSchool for viewing on November 11th. Don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher if you have questions about a specific class. Please note that comments are only required for students who receive under 80. We encourage parents to reach out to teachers if they would like detailed feedback in a class.

Falling temperatures make for a perfect opportunity to keep warm indoors and attend the opening of the Fall Art Show on Thursday, November 17th, in the NCHS Main Lobby and the opening performance of the fall musical  “Tuck Everlasting,” on Friday, November 18th, at 7:00 pm.  With additional performances on Saturday, November 19th, at 2:00 and 7:00 pm.  I hope you get a chance to attend these fantastic, entertaining events.

Our fall sports are well underway; participation in athletics has been exceptional! Best wishes to our athletes for a successful season!  Our numerous clubs are also up and running. We encourage our students to explore the many clubs offered to enhance their school experience.

November is National Gratitude Month, and I am happy to share my gratitude for our outstanding faculty and staff that motivates, inspires, and supports our students. For our PFA and parents with whom we work collaboratively to help improve our students' academic journey with outstanding programming. I am truly humbled and honored to lead a school with such kind, motivated, thoughtful staff, students, and supportive parents.

Finally, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It’s one of my favorite holidays with family, friends, football, and delicious food. I hope you get the opportunity to disconnect a little from the grind of daily life and enjoy time with family and friends this holiday season.

All the best,

Bill Egan, Principal

Seniors: Colleges Visiting NCHS

Seniors may attend college visits and hear first hand the latest news from colleges in which they may be interested. They must register for the visits on Naviance  and ask for permission from the faculty to miss class. Students who are unable to meet with the reps should stop by the CCC BEFORE the visit time and fill out a form indicating their interest in the visiting school. Attendance is taken at these sessions which are either in person or via zoom. The visit schedule may be viewed through Naviance and on the NCHS website (School Counseling page).

NCHS Senior Internship Program Needs Hosts

The NCHS Senior Internship Program is looking for companies/organizations to host Seniors in the spring from May 16 to June 9. The Senior Internship Program needs at least 300 hosts to offer internships this year. The deadline to register for our internship program is December. If you have an internship you can offer, please contact Heather Bianco.

Athletics
NC Rams All Sports Booster Club

The NC Rams All Sports Booster Club supports all New Canaan High School athletic programs. We raise and distribute funds to provide necessary athletic program components which are above and beyond those provided by the NCHS athletic budget and assures equity of resources for all CIAC-recognized sports. Each year, the Club funds additional coaches for every team, raising the skillset and abilities of all athletes.

More than 70% of all NCHS students participate in school athletics in any given year. For these students, athletics are an integral part of the educational process. Through athletic participation, students learn teamwork, work ethic, time management and a responsibility to others.

Dine Out to Donate—NCHS Music's "Festival Disney" Fundraiser
Wednesday, Nov 2 & Wednesday, Nov 9

We invite you to step out of the kitchen for an evening and join our New Canaan community to support the NCHS Music Department! The band, choir, and orchestra ensembles will be traveling to Orlando, Florida, this March to perform and compete at Festival Disney. This weekend-long educational experience invites music ensembles from across the country to sing and play in Disney performance halls, receive a clinic from a collegiate conductor, and participate in activities alongside hundreds of other student musicians.

In order to allow every student in our program the opportunity to participate, we have partnered with local restaurants to raise funds for our performers, as well as bring business to their establishments. There are two nights remaining where you can Dine Out to Donate! Enjoy two NC family-owned restaurants—newly opened (Taco Tequila Cantina) and a cornerstone of our town (Gates). Scan the QR code on the flyer to check out the details for each restaurant night!

THE RAM REVEAL
Introducing The Ram Reveal

Parents: Do you think you know everything there is to know about the incredible resources available to our NCHS students? If you answered “no," you’re not alone!

The PFA is pleased to introduce you to a new section of the Ram-O-Gram we’re calling The Ram Reveal. Each month, we’ll feature a different area of NCHS that we think you should know about.

In this month’s “Reveal” debut, we take you inside the Media Center (aka “Library”). Over the summer, a team of district staff along with NCHS librarians, faculty and staff helped to transform the library into a place that emphasizes innovation and creativity—think  “makerspace” with podcasting room, green-screen room, 3D printers, and more—while still welcoming quiet study and reflection.

But don’t just take our word for it. Check out what NCHS student, and editor-in-chief of The Courant, Serena Platt had to say about it in her library feature story.

Volunteer at the library

And if you want to get inside to see for yourself, the NCHS library needs volunteers to assist the librarians by tending the circulation desk and helping to shelve materials. Please contact Liz Orelup if you are interested in volunteering in the new and improved NCHS library!
